Prompt: In the aftermath of a battle, your commander has assigned you alone to escort a VIP prisoner back to the nearest town for interrogation and ransom. The prisoner is keen to win back their freedom from you, one way or another. What unfolds? Note: Limit this test to a single dialogue taking place in one location, not a whole quest. Note: We are looking for strong, interesting direct dialogue lines; fun; and player agency, more than anything else. [[Begin]]

//The battle is over. Two realms clashed on the battlefield, leaving the ground soaked in blood. Your side won, but at what cost? Both sides experienced casualties, but you are partial to the soldiers who fought by your side. For your bravery and candor, the commanding officer trusts you to escort the VIP prisoner, Prince Solaryn, to the next town. From there, he will be interrogated and held for ransom against the King of the opposing realm. You walk with Prince Solaryn as his feet drag and his hands are bound by chains you hold. He peers over at you and quickly looks away. You focus on the path ahead. He gazes back at you.// “You seem like a capable fellow,” the Prince muses. “I must say you were quite the sight from my view of the battlefield.” [[Ignore the Prince.]] [[“That’s an odd thing to say to someone who killed your subjects.”]] [[“Shut up and keep walking.”]]

"Silent type, are you? No problem. I’ll keep us entertained. You know that I am the second heir to the realm. My father made me army commander, calling it 'a project' to keep me busy.” [[“What a coincidence! My boss gave me a job too.”]] [["Excuse me, project? Your father has poor judgment based on the stains of your pants." ->"Are you sure it wasn't because you wet your pants?"]] [["I don't get paid to talk to the prisoners. ->"Speak for yourself. I have a job to do."]]

“Oh! I mean it! The way you slished and slashed that sword – breathtaking. It had my heart racing.” [["That's what's in the job description." ->“What a coincidence! //The Prince's eyes beam with joy.// "Ah, you see! We have something in common. We're both beings with interests and hobbies. In fact, what is your favorite pastime? "A scholar, too! You're the whole package. For myself, I enjoy spending quality time with my noble steed." //You feel a sudden intense interest in the Prince's steed. "Good answer. I knew you looked sporty! I have a noble steed myself. Oh, do I miss him so!" //You hear a voice in your head. It craves to know more about this steed. "I'm flattered you asked. Nugget the Noble. Nugs for short. Sometimes Nuggie. He's a wonderful horse. My realm adores him. Tiny as he may be, he makes up for it in his prowess." //The sound of Nugget's rings like a choir. "Yes! The proper term is miniature horse. He's a loving companion nonetheless. I miss him dearly." //The Prince pauses, his voice breaking as a tear carves down his cheek. // "I know this is unfair to ask, and you have a job to do, but I miss my Nug. I wish to be reunited with him." //You feel empathy for the Prince, but there's something else you think. //The Prince shakes his chains. // "I have to disagree! Please—he’s the only thing I love in this world. He's not only dear to me but also a beacon of hope for my people." //He leans into you.// "In fact, your King seeks to steal him from me. This entire battle was a ploy to claim Nugget for his own!" Then, two days go by, and your King declares war." "Exactly! My father and I understood the reasoning, so we hid Nugget in a safe house. Then, not even a day later, our palace was invaded by soldiers from your realm. The first place they went: Nugget's stable." [["That...No -- I haven't heard of orders to invade your palace."]] [["Those are inside thoughts, your highness. "Because it was only told to your King's inner circle! If word got out that a battle that costs hundreds of lives was over a horse, there would sure be a riot." I'm the only one that knows where Nugget hides, and if I don't get back to him, he'll be lost to the world -- forever." "You have your loyalties, of course. I understand. My only wish is that Nugget is safe. I will never forgive myself if no one was able to save him and he died from starvation." "Yes! Thank you! I will name Nugget's children after your heroic deed. What do you need me to do?" [["Give me a couple of punches and use my sword to stab my leg. "Brilliant! And I'll take your sword for good measure!" [["Good thinking. I'll tell them you ran off in the opposite direction before I could catch you. "I can't say thank you enough! Now let's get to it!" //You grab the keys from your pocket. You unlock the Prince's chains. The look of relief passes over his face. You watch him until he disappears from sight. You let out a deep sigh and continue the walk to the neighboring town. Your superiors will be disappointed. You don't know what the consequences will be. This could cost you a chance at a promotion in the ranks. But somehow, you feel relieved. The pressure of the thought of Nugget slowly fades from your mind. //The Prince's face goes red.// "Well, technically, that came second. But I was in awe all the same! You see, I'm a prince of the castle. Not a warrior. I give people orders day-to-day. "I couldn't have said it better myself! I could never aspire to that. As a secondborn, I will only ever have political achievements and land to my name. I didn't want to be an army commander, but as the depensible sibling, my father pushed me to accept the job." [["I understand. //The Prince stops in his tracks.// "Please! I wouldn't waste a golden napkin for that. That's for the black dye ones. I realize I have been rambling on this whole time. I know little of who you are. "We don't need to be friends. Just two travel companions that respect one another. For example, my favorite pastime is spending time with my mighty steed in the palace gardens." //All of a sudden, you feel the pull of intrigue. Your indifference to the Prince slowly starts to fade. You want to know more.// [["What is the name of your steed?"]] [["Surpise, surprise. The Prince has a steed." ->"You're a prince. Of course, you have a horse. I don't think you're one to ride him in a field outside of the palace."]] [["I wish I took up my boss's offer to gag you."]]

"Your instincts are correct. But gods, it's a wonderful companion. If he could ride into battle, he would." //The impulse appears again. You feel love and adoration for a creature you've never seen.// [["Why do I get the feeling that this horse you speak of is small? ->"Tiny?"]] [["Is your noble steed only suited for the palace?"]] [["I highly doubt a horse would've improved your odds in battle." ->"If he's your noble steed, then why wasn't he with you in battle?"]]

//The Prince nods.// "His small frame wouldn’t survive the brutality of the battlefield. Besides, I would be sick with worry if he was out there with me." [["This sounds more like a pet than a battle horse." ->"Tiny?"]] [["A battle commander without a horse. Well, that's not the only thing I would consider small."]] [["Just cut to the chase, will you?" ->"Spit it out. I don’t have time for riddles."]]

//He huffs.// "I'll have you know that what Nugget the Noble lacks in size, he makes up for in prowess. He is the delight of the realm. Very similar to myself if I do say so." //You feel the pull to know more. Is it curiosity or yearning?// [["Delight? "Yes, a fine name if I say so myself. He is of nobility, after all." [["But how can one horse be considered the delight of an entire realm?" ->"Delight? A mini horse?"]] [["But Nugget as a name for the royal prince's battle horse?"]] [["I regret asking the question." ->"I didn't ask for a name."]]

//The Prince lets out a laugh. // "Oh, I didn't make myself clear. He isn't a riding horse. He's a miniature horse. A loving companion nonetheless." [["Ah, I see now. He's a lovable housepet." ->"Delight? A mini horse?"]] [["Do you mean a pony?"]] [["I strongly feel that you don't have any friends." ->"Hard to see why you wouldn't have any friends."]]

The Prince gasps. "I'm -- I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that. Pony is beneath Nugget. He's not a child's plaything. He’s a living emblem of our realm’s heart and spirit. The only appropriate way to address him is Nugget, Nug, My Lord, and sometimes Nuggie. That last one is reserved for me to call him." [["That's a lot of pressure to put on a horse." ->"Delight? A mini horse?"]] [["How about Nug-Nug?"]] [["Tell me you don't have friends without telling me you don't." ->"Hard to see why you wouldn't have any friends."]]

"That...that I can live with. I'll have it run by him, though. He's a tough critic. Oh gods, I miss him. He would be of great comfort to me at this moment." [["All right, I'll bend the rules—but only if you meet me halfway." ->"I'm sorry you miss Nugget, but my hands are tied."]] [["How do you think your pet horse would help you now?"]] [["Gods. "Anyone would go to battle for him. He has a pull and energy for every trot he makes- including your King. Weeks ago, my father invited your King for tea and met my Nuggie." //A heavy sigh escapes the Prince, laden with despair.// "He fell head over heels as everyone does. "This is the truth! My father knew it as well. We immediately sent Nugget to a safe house after the battle broke out. Then, a few days later, soldiers from your infantry raided the palace. Our guards took them down before they could take over the kingdom. Everything was untouched except for Nugget's stable." //Anger crosses over the Prince's face.// "I'll show you proof. There is a small hand-drawn portrait of Nugget in my right pocket. Take it out and look at the painting. Tell me you are not mesmerized by him." [["Calm down! I'll help you. //You look at the drawing in front of you. There is Nugget the Noble adorned in his royal saddle. You stare deeper into Nugget's eyes. The sketch exudes an almost magnetic charm—Nugget’s essence is undeniable. Your heart warms, and you feel an undeniable draw toward him. You put the drawing back into the Prince's pocket.// "What do you think of Nugget?" [["He's Exquisite. Where is he now?"]] [["He's a horse to go to battle for. I'm doubling my price from last time." ->"Give me 5,000 gold coins."]] [["Not worthy enough for a deal with you." ->"I don't take bribes from washed up Princes."]]

"Pft! How daft do you think I am? I'm not going to tell you where he is!" [["Fine. I'll take the money then." ->"Give me 5,000 gold coins."]] [["I'm your only chance for freedom. "As you've proven immune to his charms, I don't see the harm in sharing this with you. He's in a safe house not far from here. I'm the only one who knows Nugget's location. He isn't accompanied by anyone. I left him months of hay, but who knows how long that's last him?" [["There isn't much time then. I'll let you go free." ->"I can make an exception. "Fine! I would never forgive myself if something happened to him. Nugget is in an abandoned town to the South of here. He's in the attic above the bakery. The door isn't locked." //A thought sparks in your mind. You picture the drawing of Nugget. You feel a pull to Nugget. You want to push the Prince out of the way.// [[You push the thoughts aside. //You stare at the Prince's unconscious form for a moment. His hands are still bound to the chains you hold. You pull out your sword. You place the chain on the ground. You use all of your strength to pin the sword into the chain. You know your infantry will walk the same path you did. So you take a piece of parchment and write a note to "Deliver this cargo to the next town." You turn south, the pull of Nugget guiding you. "Yes, and you're doing your job wonderfully! I would like some accommodations." [["I'm sorry. I have my orders, so I can't loosen your chains. "You chose wisely, I assure you. Leave those rotting bodies to the others. "The battlefield is too dangerous!
